Mountain

Here is the side of the mountain where we met with the pastors. Notice the solar panels and satellite dish - we had both wifi and cell service up here. You will see some bare spots on the side of the mountain. Those are working farms where they grow beans, coffee and other vegetables.

Fina

We got an early start today for our four hour drive to the airport. On the way we stopped at their version of Wal-mart and I bought some DR coffee, candy and real vanilla. This was a very quick trip but had a lot of impact. I'm always impressed of the transformation that can take place for only $35 a month. I'm at the airport right now getting ready to fly to Miami and then on to Dallas where we will host a pastors lunch at the Get Motivated Seminar. I will be going to the see the Cowboys play at their new stadium tomorrow. I have some more photos from the final day that I will post.

Yesterday

We had a long day driving to the top of a giant mountain to meet with over 30 pastors for a day of pastor training. It was a beautiful jungle like area that produces coffee. Our Toyota bus struggled to make it up the small switchback dirt road and we had a few scares hugging the narrow path. Our way home got real exciting as some juveniles ignited a fire in the middle of the road to get traffic to slow down so they could throw rocks at the vehicles. We pulled into a bank parking lot where the police watch the whole thing from the safety of the bank lobby. We ended up taking a detour through some dark, crowded side streets that seemed scarier than the main road. We got back to the hotel and walked to the open air restaurant next door where I had fish soup and chicken and rice.

Community Center

We went to a community center supported by World Vision. They teach computer skills to over 150 children a week. Here is one of the music classes teaching guitar and piano. Leaning a skill enhances a child's self esteem and makes them more likely to stay in school and succeed. The computer skills will allow these children to go to the university and make a higher income that will benefit their community.. Another great difference that your $35 a month sponsorship makes in the Dominican Republic.

Goats

Today at the goat ranch. World Vision helped 20 women start a goat farm. They currently have over 50 and they are working their way up to 100 so they can open a goat cheese plant. The trickle down effect from their profit is helping the entire community.

Lot's of Color

As we were leaving the World Vision project area tonight we stopped by an area that is on our list of communities we would like to start a work if we had the funding. At the center of this community of 500 is a tiny evangelical church whose pastor has a big vision. In the 80 plus year history of this small community no one has ever graduated from high school This last year through the pastors hard work and dedication, 10 students went to the university, a first for this community. Strong leaders like this and dedicated churches are fertile ground for successful World Vision projects. I'm praying that we will be able to move into this community soon.

More on the farm...

They have enclosed their entire property with a net to thwart off insects and animals enabling them to grow organic, pesticide free crops.

The Farm

Today we visited a farm run by a group of ladies that World Vision trained and supplied. They now raise crops for their families and enough to sell at the local market. They have dreams of one day selling their vegetables in the big city. With your $35 a month, World Vision brings hope and a future.
